Heat treatment is an important process in mechanical manufacturing. Its core characteristic is that it does not alter the macroscopic shape or overall chemical composition of the workpiece; rather, it improves the service performance by modifying the internal microstructure or the surface chemical composition. These performance characteristics include strength, hardness, wear resistance, and toughness. However, the resulting changes typically require specialized testing to be observed.
There are many types of heat treatment processes, which can be categorized into three major groups based on the treatment method: overall heat treatment, surface heat treatment, and chemical heat treatment.
Common processes include annealing, normalizing, quenching, tempering, solid-solution treatment, and age hardening. Each process has specific application scenarios and effects.
Annealing: After heating a metal to an appropriate temperature, it is slowly cooled. This process reduces hardness, refines grain size, relieves internal stresses, and enhances ductility and toughness. It is often used to improve machinability.
Normalizing: Heated above the critical temperature and cooled in air. The cooling rate is faster than that of annealing, which can refine grain size, improve microstructural uniformity, and give the material better strength and toughness.
Quenching: Rapid cooling to achieve high hardness and wear resistance, but it increases brittleness and is typically used in conjunction with tempering.
Tempering: After quenching, the material is heated to a temperature below the critical point and then cooled. This process allows adjustment of hardness and toughness. Tempering is classified into low-, medium-, and high-temperature tempering, each serving specific purposes: low-temperature tempering maintains high hardness, medium-temperature tempering enhances elasticity, and high-temperature tempering achieves comprehensive mechanical properties.
Solution Treatment: The alloy is heated to a high temperature within the single-phase region and then rapidly cooled, resulting in a supersaturated solid solution. This process enhances ductility and corrosion resistance and is commonly used for aluminum alloys and stainless steels.
Aging Treatment: By holding the alloy at a specific temperature, precipitated strengthening phases are formed from the solid solution, thereby enhancing the alloy's strength. Aging treatments are categorized into natural aging and artificial aging.
Surface heat treatment—such as induction heating—modifies only the surface microstructure of the workpiece, thereby enhancing surface hardness and wear resistance.
Other processes, such as cryogenic treatment, can stabilize the microstructure and improve the fatigue limit, while chemical heat treatments like gas nitriding can enhance surface corrosion resistance and wear resistance. Overall, the selection of a heat treatment process should be optimized based on the material type and the requirements of the workpiece, in order to achieve an optimal balance of performance.
